The most successful applicants are in the upper 10% of their high school class and preparation can start as early as the 9^th grade. When in the 9^th grade, you should speak with a guidance counselor and try to plan a college-preparatory track, in the classes you choose to take. Getting involved in a science fair and heavy involvement in extracurricular activities should start, even in the 9^th grade.

By the 11^th grade, you should make sure you are taking all the subjects required for your college preparation and you can sign up for the preliminary exam for the SAT. This can help you find the areas you need to improve on, as you start getting ready for your college education. Extracurricular activities are considered in USC admissions, so you should continue to be active in community organizations. When you start planning your senior-year classes, you should also find out about taking AP exams and strategize on college entrance exams, like the SAT or ACT.
